Terra Firma x 1000 Cranes

The Terra Firma – edible tablescape is an installation and design research that encourages us to think about what and how we eat, as well as whether we could incorporate food production and food waste into the surface of a table.

Terra Firma is a table, but also a serving vessel and a sharing plate that creates topographic surfaces and edible table landscapes, aiming to foster a stronger connection and appreciation for food. It invites you to mindful eating by encouraging you to investigate each ingredient in front of you – to touch, smell, and taste with full attention.

Where and how is our food grown and produced? How do we eat our food? Can we serve food straight on the table surface? Could the link from farm to table be even shorter by making the farm and the table the same unit?

Terra Firma has a life cycle, as does nature, signaling that seasons change and not all foods are available all the time. It is in its third life cycle, where dried sprouts become another layer of the surface, fortifying the soil and contributing to the the next sprouting.

Terra Firma is built with the help of Krohwin, using ecological materials and traditional building methods.

Terra Firma is made out of red clay mixed with water, and in parts with coffee grounds and leftovers from previous Terra Firma table installations.

1000 Cranes - festival of Asian wordless theatre

The Great Desire of the human heart washes over words… How to express it, how to make your request? A hand finds a paper; a folded crane becomes the messenger bird. Fold one and you are an Artist – you can enjoy the work that you have done; fold a hundred and you are a Master – strong of mind; fold a thousand and you are a Seer – you sense the power of the human heart!
